Our Story: $4,000,000 in two years

Liquid Apogee Designs is comprised of myself, Justin Bowen, and my business partner Nik Kourpouanidis. Back in 2005 Nik and I were working as flight controllers at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Today (only two short years later) we're successful affiliates bringing in 7 figures per year in affiliate commissions.

We recently added it all up and realized that we've made over $4,000,000 in our first two years in business. We've been totally blown away by the level of success we've had. Here's a quick summary of how it all happened. Note that this isn't a sales letter. It's really our story.

We needed a few hundred dollars...

At NASA, Nik and I had developed a friendship based on our common interest in guitar and 80's hair bands. A few times a month we got together and jammed for a few hours. Our intent was to eventually write and record some music. Working on a government salary made it a little challenging to go out and buy the music equipment we wanted, so we started thinking about ways we could make some extra cash to support our music ambitions. I had been developing web pages as kind of a hobby since 1997, so naturally my thoughts were on the web. "How can we bring in an extra couple hundred bucks a month?" - a couple hundred bucks per month was all we needed to support our modest music ambitions.

So, we brainstormed web business ideas. Quickly we had a decent list of businesses that we thought had merit - things that hadn't been done on the web yet, or that hadn't been done correctly (in our opinion). One idea dominated our thoughts and we decide to go after it. In fact, we came very close to spending $3000 to be a sponsor at a big convention where hundreds of prospects in the relevant industry would be. The convention was something like 6 months away. So we had 6 months to build a large database driven web site with tens of thousands of pages. The concept required a large user administration capability where both regular consumers and professionals could input, modify, and otherwise administer their offerings and profiles. Needless to say, this would have been a huge undertaking. And then...

Oprah changed our lives forever (sniff sniff)

One night my wife was watching a previously Tivo'ed Oprah episode and I overheard Oprah announce the books that she and a her book club would be reading all summer long - a collection of three William Faulkner books. My mind started churning …"Lets see, Oprah just announced to millions of viewers that they should buy all of these William Faulkner Books over the summer". So immediately, without consulting Nik, I jumped on the computer and purchased the domain WilliamFaulknerBooks.com. You see, I'd known about Amazon's affiliate program for years and I'd been reading up on SEO and PPC techniques (preparing for our previously mentioned business idea), and it was "clear" to me that we could make some money promoting William Faulkner books through Amazon's affiliate program.

We jumped on it and I built a site in 2 days. I emailed the site owners of the top William Faulkner related sites and got most of them to link to our site. And we started our Google and Yahoo PPC campaigns. Our ill informed approach was to get as much traffic as possible. We shot for the number 1 position on all the terms we were bidding on - even though Google's estimation tool told us that we might spend $200 - $300 per month (at the time this seemed like so very much money).

Our first affiliate program has spectacular results...Spectacularly Bad

So how did Mr. Faulkner perform for us? We spent about $140 in PPC costs and we brought in about $70 in commissions. So we lost $70. Bummer. When I look back at that first attempt, I see many things that we did incorrectly. In fact, it's a great case study on what not to do. But this experience taught us that it was possible to generate commissions by via PPC. We just needed some guidance on how to do it correctly.

Goal Accomplished

After we picked up the pieces from our first (failed) campaign, we joined CJ and LinkShare to see what other merchants we could promote. After testing a few campaigns we were lucky to find one that worked. And within a few months of starting we had accomplished our goal of making a few hundred dollars a month. But there's more to the story...

With our limited success Nik and I came to the realization that if we were able to find other successful programs and duplicate our early success, we could potentially "quit our day jobs" and be our own bosses. So, we went for it. We started joining and testing as many affiliate programs as we could in our limited time. Recall that we were still flight controllers at NASA - jobs that kept us plenty busy.

Our efforts resulted in a few extra campaigns that brought in an extra $100 per month. This was nice, but it wasn't going to launch our departure from NASA. We needed a few orders of magnitude increase in our bottom line. So we started buying, downloading, and otherwise acquiring as many affiliate marketing know-how e-books as possible.
